Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

Ok, so I made an agreement with the voices in my head that I would, once a week, listen to an album that either I hadn’t listened to “all the way through”, or had never listened to at all.
I guess I picked the wrong one to start with.

Some say that this is the greatest album of all time. These people need locking up.
Its utter shite, has the worst key change of all time, and should be consigned to the dustbin of history.
Unless, you want to compare the lyrics of “When I’m Sixty-Four” to what happened in Paul’s life when he was 64.

  1. It’s certainly not The Beatles’ best album (Revolver, if you’re me, The Best of The Beatles if you’re Alan Partridge) but it is a clear indication of their direction of travel.

They were the biggest band in the world at the point they recorded this, and ok, you might need to be a little populist to get to that point but ultimately you have to also be good at your craft.

Is When I’m Sixty-Four a masterpiece? No. Is it better than For No One? Absolutely not. But is it a great song? Well, yes, it’s really good. Catchy, with fun lyrics and an upbeat tone, what’s not to like?

Not everything The Beatles did was full of meaning and significance, in fact I’d argue that not much of what they did had anything in it that really provided any insight into the human condition. If you want that listen to Bob Dylan.

They were the first, really big ‘pop’ act, expecting more than pop music leads to disappointment.

As a side note, I blame Lennon’s nonsense lyrics in I Am The Walrus for all of Oasis’ output. Just because you can write meaningless, nonsense lyrics, doesn’t mean you need to build your career around it. Ok, Noel?

My vote for your next album, is Desire by Bob Dylan.

I was referring to the fact that the one-legged ex-pornist left him when he was 64 (2006)

Note taken on the Dylan album. TBD tomorrow
